(Milan, Ind.) - More local students will begin hitting the books Thursday.

August 9 is the first student day at both Milan Community Schools and Switzerland County Schools. They are the final two southeastern Indiana schools to end their summer breaks.

At Switzerland County High School, returning students will be greeted by new principal David Todd. He’s a familiar face to students, having served as the school’s assistant principal for the past 11 years. Mark Boggs is the new assistant principal and athletic director.

Switz Schools also have a new superintendent this year in Rodney Hite, a 1993 graduate of Switzerland County High. Hite, a former principal at South Ripley Junior High School, replaces retired superintendent Mike Jones.

Milan students might notice some new technology on school buses during their ride to school. Over the summer, all of the school corporation’s buses were equipped with high definition video recording systems. Funded by a $20,000 grant from the Rising Sun Regional Foundation, each large bus is equipped with two cameras while smaller buses have one camera.

Here is a list of first student days at local school districts which have yet to return:

  • Boone County Schools, August 15
  • Southwest Local Schools, August 21
  • Three Rivers Local Schools, August 20
