(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Lawrenceburg Common Council has voted to advance a proposed new splash park at the Pat O’Neill Memorial Pool.

Councilman Tony Abbott proposed the splash park earlier this month. At an August 20 special council meeting, present members voted 4-0 to move forward with the project with a budget not to exceed $1.1 million.

The city is working with pool design firm HWC Engineering, on the project.  Cory Whitesell, HWC’s director of planning, said that if the city moves quickly, the new splash park could be completed by next June.

The proposed splash pad would include a zero-depth entry wading pool for little swimmers. Fountains and water features such as a pirate ship and dumping bucket could also be included. The current concrete ground surface at the existing splash park may be replaced with a softer, padded surface.

Abbott said the updated splash pad could help save money over time. The current facility drains used water to the sewer system, but the updated version would include a new filtering system capable of recycling the splash park water.

The current pool at the complex would remain as-is. Construction on the splash park would not keep the larger pool from opening on Memorial Day.
