ISP Identifies Victims Of Fiery July 26 Crash On SR 1

One man died and another was injured in the crash on State Road 1 in Greendale last month.

(Greendale, Ind.) – Indiana State Police say two men from Indianapolis were the drivers involved in a fatal crash on State Road 1 in Greendale last month.

The wreck happened on Thursday, July 26 at about 2:51 p.m. on S.R. 1 near Nowlin Avenue, according to a crash report provided by state police troopers.

A 2016 GMC Sierra driven by John Charles Swinney, 35, was traveling southbound on the highway when for an unknown reason his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a northbound 2009 Volvo tractor trailer driven by Charles Carmer, 68.

Immediately after the impact, both of the vehicles caught fire.

Swinney had been ejected from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Carmer was able to exit his truck after it came to a rest on the east side of the highway. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with injuries including broken ribs and numerous other non-fatal injuries, troopers said.

Carmer submitted to a blood draw. State police say no drugs or alcohol are suspected on his part.

Investigators have not said whether they believe Swinney was under the influence at the time of the crash.

The crash kept State Road 1 closed for about seven hours on July 26.
