Gov. Holcomb Announces $189 Million for Broadband Expansion; REMC Receives Three Grants

Historic investment will improve Internet access at home for 52,900 locations.

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric Holcomb announced Monday a record-setting investment in broadband with $189 million going towards 154 broadband infrastructure expansion projects across the state in the third round of the Next Level Connections Broadband Grant Program.

In total, rounds one, two and three of the program have awarded $268 million for broadband infrastructure for more than 74,800 homes and commercial locations

In addition, 35 telecommunications providers and utility cooperatives contributed more than $239 in matching funds.

Southeastern Indiana REMC received three separate grants in this cycle.

A $3.7 million grant will expand broadband access to 946 households and 65 businesses in Ohio and Switzerland counties. REMC received the grant with a local match of $3.8 million, bringing the total project cost to $7.6 million.

A second grant of $3.3 million will expand broadband access to 307 households and 40 businesses in Dearborn, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland counties. Another local match of $1.5 million brings the total project cost to $4.8 million.

Lastly, SEIREMC received a $1.5 million grant to help residents and businesses in Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland counties. The grant will expand broadband access to 292 households and 18 businesses in the six counties.

“This record-setting investment in broadband is another game-changer for Hoosiers who now, more than ever, need affordable, reliable internet,” Gov. Holcomb said. “With this third round, we take giant steps in leveling the playing field for our residents regardless of where they choose to live, work or go to school.”
