The annual event is held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway
INDIANAPOLIS - The IHSAA Leadership Conference was held Thursday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Each year, member schools are encouraged to send student-athletes, who have demonstrated leadership skills, or have potential for leadership roles.
Known local schools in attendance this year included Batesville, East Central and South Ripley high schools.
Students from those schools joined over 1,000 students from across the state for the conference, which featured three nationally known keynote speakers, a tour the venue and the Rule the Road project engagement.
The students heard Omari Pearson, Fletcher Cleaves, and Steve Roberts about leadership, adversity, perseverance and drive.
Rule the Road, through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, offered participants an opportunity to practice lifesaving skills on a closed course with certified instructors. It also reinforced and reaffirmed safe driving practices through various activities, including not driving impaired or distracted, hazard recognition, vehicle handling, space management, and speed management
Students were also encouraged to participate in a t-shirt exchange during lunch, which tasked students to bring a school t-shirt to exchange with student-athletes from other schools.
