Sunman-Dearborn School Corporation Selected for Literacy Cadre

The Literacy Cadre is working to help Indiana’s students read proficiently by the end of the third grade.

(St. Leon, Ind.) – The Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation has been selected for the 2023 Literacy Cadre by the Indiana Department of Education.

Supported by the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL) at the University of Indianapolis and the IDOE, the Literacy Cadre is working to help Indiana’s students read proficiently by the end of the third grade.

To achieve this mission, the Literacy Cadre develops and implements collaborative professional development for K-2 educators across the state based on the science of reading, a compilation of evidence-based research on reading, reading development, and reading instruction.

The partnership with Sunman-Dearborn Schools includes over $250,000 to be used to hire Literacy Coaches at each of the school corporation’s elementary schools.

The Science of Reading is a body of scientifically-based research and best practices about reading and issues related to reading and writing and incorporates phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
