NKU Raises Over $45K For COVID-19 Student Emergency Fund

As of Friday, March 27, over 160 applications had been received, and more than 40 students received funding.

(Highland Heights, Ky.) - In what seemed like a blink of an eye, the COVID-19 outbreak led to schools across the nation with no choice but to close, which led to the disruption of many student lives.

In response, Northern Kentucky University has created the COVID-19 Student Emergency Fund.

306 "gifts" have been given to this Student Emergency Fund to total $46,165 in donations to support students who are now finding themselves with financial struggles they never saw coming.

Donations help provide for local students with:

  • Food, toiletries, and funding for necessary medications

  • Any educational-related expenses as NKU moves to online classes

  • Money for travel for students who may need to go home or to and from work

  • Funds for unmet financial costs due to loss of employment

  • Student wages unable to be earned due to closures

As of Friday, March 27, over 160 applications had been received, and more than 40 students received funding.

"Since the pandemic began, I have become a full-time student (15 credit hours) online, a full-time teacher to my eight-year-old daughter, a full-time daycare provider for my four-year-old son, and a part- time student worker all at home. The reason I applied for the emergency fund was to have some security during this time. I am a mother of two children and we have had some financial obligations that left me with hardly nothing in my banking account. The funding will provide a cushion to buy school supplies, medications, and get caught up on any bills that we may get behind on during the pandemic,” says recipient Keyah.

To apply for funds, visit the NKU Community Care Team website.

If you know a student who needs assistance, reach out to the NKU Community Care Team, visit the website, or call 859-572-5147.
