(Covington, Ky.) – New hazmat signs are being installed along Interstate 71/75 and Interstate 275 in northern Kentucky.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the signs will improve highway safety in the region by reinforcing longstanding restriction on hazardous cargo around the Brent Spence Bridge.
The signage update comes just months after a fiery crash on the Brent Spence Bridge in November 2020 that shut the bridge down for approximately six weeks.
During the crash, one of the two semitractor-trailers involved was carrying a small quantity of potassium hydroxide, a nonflammable corrosive chemical. While the truck was on the bridge legally, it still prompted a re-examination of hazmat signage in the area of the Spence Bridge.
KYTC officials plan to have the new and upgraded signage installed at 12 locations on I-71/75 northbound and I-275 east and westbound in Boone and Kenton counties.
A contractor is expected to begin installing the new panel signs on April 12.
“We listened and then we held conversations at the local, state and federal levels regarding the hazmat restrictions in the area,” Kentucky Transportation Secretary Jim Gray said. “We share the desire to install signage to reinforce the restrictions, which commercial drivers who plan their routes should already know.
