(Aurora, Ind.) – The Lawrenceburg and South Dearborn communities came together last Friday to help those in need.

While the Tigers and Knights battled on the football field, attendees donated items for Community Blessing Boxes.

The items collected were hand warmers, gloves, and hats to help keep area homeless warm this winter.

South Dearborn supporters won the Winter Drive for a second consecutive season by donating 338 items and/or dollars.

Lawrenceburg supporters helped the cause by donating 138 items and/or dollars.

“We so appreciate everybody because now we have 338 warm items to distribute throughout the winter along with 196 dollars to continue purchase things such as hand warmers or hotel rooms when its bitter cold,” said winter drive organizer Brenda Selmeyer.

There are two Community Blessing Boxes in Aurora and two in Lawrenceburg. They are located at the Tanners Creek boat ramp, the Dearborn Trailhead, the Aurora Dog Park and Lesko Park.

“Those boxes are solely maned by volunteers,” said Selmyer. “Volunteers put canned goods in their all year long, along with personal hygiene items and warm clothing.”

The giving goes behind the boxes through. Over the past year, hotel rooms have been purchased when temperatures get bitter cold, and a family living in their car were helped into an apartment.
