Justice Sullivan Leaving Indiana Supreme Court

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana Supreme Court Justice Frank Sullivan, Jr. is leaving his post this summer.

Sullivan made the announcement following the swearing in of new Justice Mark Massa on Monday. He is leaving to begin teaching law at Indiana University in August.

“I am honored to join the faculty at the Indiana University McKinney School of Law,” Sullivan said. “I have long admired the faculty of the law school and its commitment to the school’s students and to community service. I very much hope I can make my own contributions in those regards.”

Sullivan had served as an adjunct professor at the school from 2007 through 2009. Dean Gary R. Roberts said in a statement he expects Sullivan to teach classes in business law and corporate finance.

The retirement means Governor Mitch Daniels will get to appoint a third person to the state Supreme Court. Last month, Daniels selected Massa to replace retiring Chief Justice Randall Shepard.

Sullivan has been on the court since 1993 when he was appointed by then-Governor Evan Bayh.

A definite date for Sullivan’s departure from the court has not yet been determined.
