Original story published Friday, August 23:

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Ivy Tech Community College’s Lawrenceburg Campus and Lawrenceburg Main Street will co-host the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s production “Macbeth” at 7 p.m. Monday, August 26 in Lawrenceburg Civic Park.

“Macbeth” tells the story of a Scottish general whose life is forever changed after he receives a prophesy that he will become the King of Scotland. In the midst of his ambitious climb to the position, there are battle scenes, ghosts, witches, love, and betrayal.

“This free, non-ticketed event is a part of Ivy Tech’s growing liberal arts and community outreach initiative," said Ron Nicholson, professor and chair of the English program at Ivy Tech.

“Our role in the community is to bring that culture and the higher level of education.” Nicholson said. “We want to bring the arts in to show them the kind of programming, the kind of education that people get when they come to Ivy Tech.”

The Lawrenceburg performance of “Macbeth” is a part of CSC’s two-month Shakespeare in the Park tour, which began June 21 and will take place in around 30 different locations in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. The plays featured are “Macbeth,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Romeo and Juliet.”

Courtney Burgtorf, marketing and sales associate for CSC, said even those who are not familiar with Shakespeare should attend the show.

“You can bring a lawn chair, bring a blanket, bring your family and enjoy an hour and a half long performance of one of Shakespeare’s classics,” Burgtorf said. “It’s a really wonderful way to get introduced to Shakespeare.”

Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Services and Student Success at the Lawrenceburg campus, Shakira Grubbs said the “Macbeth” performance illustrates Ivy Tech’s goal of connecting the community while educating them on the arts and opportunities available at their campus.

“We want to be the community’s provider of cultural and educational opportunities,” Grubbs said. “We believe that providing these types of opportunities brings the community together, as well.”
