Indiana Unemployment Drops To 7.8 Percent In July

Local unemployment numbers will be available Monday, August 24, at noon.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana's unemployment rate dropped 3.4 percent from June to dip below the national rate for the month of July. 

Indiana's unemployment rate stands at 7.8 percent for the month of July, while the national rate 10.2 percent. 

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports the number of unemployed people actively seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force. 

Indiana’s labor force had a net decrease of 75,741 last month. This was a result of a decrease of 117,983 unemployed residents and an increase of 42,242 employed residents.

In total, the state’s labor force stands at 3.31 million and Indiana’s 62.8 percent labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 61.4 percent

Locally, all counties, excluding Ohio County, have unemployment rates at or below the state rate. 

  • Dearborn - 7.2%
  • Ohio - 8.2%
  • Ripley - 6.1%
  • Switzerland - 7.8%
