Indiana Dems Set To Pick State Treasurer, Auditor Candidates

No Democratic candidates were running for either office in the May primary, so the party can nominate a candidate at their state convention.

John Aguilera and Joselyn Whitticker

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana has not had either a Democratic state treasurer or auditor in more than three decades.

But that doesn’t mean the Democratic party won’t try to buck the trend this November.

Two candidates are hoping to be announced as the party’s candidates for auditor and treasurer at the Indiana Democratic Party state convention to be held Saturday, June 9. No candidates appeared on the ballot for either office in the party’s May 2018 primary election.

John Aguilera, a former state representative from East Chicago, is running for state treasurer. He served four years in the Indiana House and has also been on the Lake County Council. Aguilera is a former president of the Indiana Latino Institute.

If selected by delegates, Aguilera would face incumbent Republican treasurer Kelly Mitchell in November.

Aiming to run for state auditor in the fall is Joselyn Whitticker, a small business owner and former school teacher and administrator. Whitticker is a branch leader for the NAACP and former Marion City Council member.

Whitticker’s Republican opponent would be incumbent auditor Tera Klutz.

Currently, Republican hold every state-level statewide elected office in Indiana, in addition to possessing supermajorities in the House and Senate.
