(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb says he's looking forward to reviewing the latest school safety proposal from state lawmakers.
A school safety task force was established following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida last February. The governor told The Northwest Indiana Times on Thursday he's not yet read through the task force’s entire report, but he hopes to go through it with a fine-toothed comb.
"I think it's both a near-term and long-term document that I've been champing at the bit to get," Holcomb said. "I will digest it, word for word, and then circle up with all the folks who had a hand in it."
Holcomb said he hopes the recommendations can serve as a blueprint for local schools which may be looking for new school safety ideas.
Some recommendations, the governor suggested, could be implemented without waiting for legislative action.
Such action was taken last month when Holcomb announced a program to provide free metal detectors to nearly all public school districts who requested them. The program awards one metal detector for every 250 students.
