(Brookville, Ind.) – The Whitewater River has fallen back below flood stage, but not before causing some problems during a rain-filled Tuesday.

The river at Brookville crested at 20.3 feet Tuesday evening after being inundated with rain during morning and afternoon thunderstorms. Flood stage is 20 feet.

As of 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, the river is at about 16 feet and falling.

The river, as well as swollen creeks and streams, flooded roads across Franklin County, where schools are on a two-hour delay Wednesday morning to allow school buses more time to make their rounds. The list of roads closed in the county includes Bulltown Road, Stipps Hill Road, Pipe Creek Road, St. Mary’s Road, Huntersville Road, Barber Road, and Highland Center Road.

Elsewhere, high water forced closures on Lawrenceburg Road at Suspension Bridge Road in Whitewater Township and Mount Hope Road near New Haven Road in Harrison. A mudslide closed Peppertown Road near Johnson Fork Road in West Harrison, but the Dearborn County Highway Department says Peppertown has been cleared and reopened.

The strong storms which rolled through the tri-state Tuesday night brought hail of one-inch to Florence.

A number of homes and businesses lost power, too. About 100 Southeastern Indiana REMC customers are still without electricity in Switzerland County as of Wednesday morning.

After a high in the 70s Tuesday, the forecast shows the weather turning colder. A high of 41 Wednesday will be followed by an overnight low of 27, then a high of 48 Thursday.

We should dry out over the next few days. A chance of rain returns Friday. A couple inches of snow are possible Friday night.
