(Dillsboro, Ind.) – In recognition of Veterans Day, students at Dillsboro Elementary School recently left the classroom for some important community service.

Fifth and sixth grade students visited Oakdale Cemetery to clean military markers on the headstones of local veterans. They also placed a flag at each veteran’s grave.

Several community members helped with making this activity possible.

Perry Oak donated the bus, fuel and time to take students to the cemetery. The Color Guard for American Legion Post 292 in Dillsboro showed students how to fold a flag and explained how veterans are honored at a military funeral.

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 292 volunteered their time to organize the cleaning supplies and help students.

The PTO is recognized for organizing the trip, while the Town of Dillsboro provided a water truck to help with cleaning headstones.

Dillsboro Elementary School will hold their Veteran’s Day Program on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The event will take place in the gym and is open to the public.
