(Sunman, Ind.) – Congresswoman Erin Houchin (R-Ind.-09) was in Sunman on Sunday for a dedication ceremony of a new Safe Haven Baby Box.

The baby box allows the opportunity for mothers to surrender their newborns safely and anonymously.

Indiana’s Safe Haven law enables a parent to surrender an infant less than 30 days old to a baby box, emergency room, fire station or police station without fear of prosecution.

The new site at the Sunman Area Life Squad Building brings the total of baby boxes in the ninth district to 20.

“Sunday was a very special day with the dedication of a new baby box in the ninth district,” said Houchin. “I have worked hard to make this a reality during my time in the statehouse and have seen success story after success story since its inception in 2017. Twenty-one babies have been saved in Indiana because we worked together to make days like these possible.”

Houchin continued by saying representatives from Florida and Ohio have reached out to model Indiana’s legislation.

The Sunman location marks the 97th Safe Haven Baby Box in Indiana. There are a total of 137 baby boxes nationwide.
