(Dillsboro, Ind.) - Alberta June (Ochs) Lewis will celebrate her 100th birthday on June 9, 2022. She was born and raised in Dillsboro. And has spent her entire life in the community that she loves. This sassy little lady can be seen driving to the Post Office or local events on her “cart”, daily. Her son and daughter would attest that it is her stubbornness that keeps her going.

Alberta was born the oldest child of Albert and Mary (Weiss) Ochs. She attended Dillsboro Public School, where she graduated in 1940. She was one of Dillsboro’s first high school cheerleaders. Her uniform can be viewed at the History Room in Dillsboro Library. After graduation she completed her post-secondary education at the Miller School of Business. In 1944 she married John Lewis, of Moores Hill. They built their home in Dillsboro on Lenover Street where she has spent the past 70 years.

She raised her two children, Tom and Susan, in Dillsboro, while her husband continued to serve in the military. John was often absent for months or years at war, while Alberta waited at home taking care of parents and children. She began working at Dillsboro School as secretary in 1963. And later moved her career to Moores Hill School where she remained until retirement at the age of 70.

Alberta continues to reside in her home and remains active in the community. She attends church several times a week and is frequently seen visiting with friends at the Dillsboro Food Pantry & Thrift Store. The community, family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate this Centenarian on Sunday, June 12th at the Dillsboro Civic Center from 2-4 PM.
