Rising Sun Police Chief David Hewitt Dies Following Crash

(Rising Sun, Ind.) – Rising Sun Chief of Police David Hewitt died in a crash Wednesday morning.

Rising Sun Chief of Police David Hewitt. City of Rising Sun photo.Hewitt, 49, was the driver involved in a single-vehicle crash on State Road 56 near Spring Branch Road south of Vevay at around 7:20 a.m., according to the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office.

Hewitt was flown from the scene to Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton, Kentucky. He died of his injuries there, the sheriff's office said.

City leaders were at the hospital Wednesday afternoon as the news of Hewitt's passing broke.

The Florence, Indiana resident was hired on at the Rising Sun Police Department in 1998. He became the small city’s police chief in 2004. He also served stints with the Switzerland County Sheriff's Office, Dearborn County Sheriff's Department and Lawrenceburg Police Department.

Hewitt was known as an avid outdoorsman.

City of Rising Sun Mayor Brent Bascom provided the following statement: 

It is with great sadness that I must confirm that David Hewitt, Chief of Police for Rising Sun, Indiana, passed away this morning from injuries sustained in a single vehicle accident in Switzerland County, Indiana. 

Chief Hewitt served Southeastern Indiana for 27 years as a Police Officer for the Switzerland County Sheriff's Department, the Dearborn County Sheriff's Department, the Lawrenceburg Police Department, and the Rising Sun Police Department. He became employed by Rising Sun Police Department in 1998 and was named the Chief of Police in 2004. At this time, I am ordering that all flags in the City of Rising Sun be lowered to half-staff and to remain at half-staff for a period of 27 days, one day for each year of service that Chief Hewitt gave to the citizens of our area. 

On behalf of the City of Rising Sun, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Chief Hewitt's family. I ask that everyone please respect the privacy of Chief Hewitt's family and that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they deal with this tragic loss.
