UPDATE: Aurora Police Officer, Batesville Woman Injured in U.S. 31 Crash

Update published Wednesday, September 13 at 1:53 p.m.: 

Riley Duerstock was pronounced deceased on Tuesday at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. 

The 2021 Batesville High School graduate was the passenger in a vehicle that was struck by a truck on U.S. 31 in Marshall County on Sunday night. Her boyfriend, Jarrod Nichols, was also injured in the crash. 

He remains hospitalized with unknown injuries. 

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. 

The investigation is ongoing. 

 

Original story published Monday, September 11 at 4:05 p.m.:

(Marshall County, Ind.) – An Aurora police officer and Batesville woman were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Marshall County.

Jarrod Nichols, of Milan and Riley Duerstock, of Batesville, were the passengers of a vehicle that was struck by a truck along U.S. 31 on Sunday night.

According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, the truck caught fire and ended up off the side of the road.

Nichols and Duerstock were both hospitalized. Nichols, a 2017 graduate of Milan High School, was sworn in as an Aurora Patrolman on June 24. He is a certified EMT and has served in the Indiana National Guard for six years.

The driver of the truck has been identified as Arturo Mendez, of White Pigeon.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
