(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – At times, the trash that lines U.S. 50 is so off-putting that a fifth grader is motivated to do something about it.

Mr. Andrew Block’s fifth grade class at St. Lawrence School decided to hold a clean-up of the litter. Help the Highway will take place Saturday, June 22 from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Volunteers will walk along U.S. 50 through the city picking up trash.

“We all agreed to do this. We were first going to pick up trash in the Ohio River, but then we decided to do trash on the highway,” explains student Jackson Schmid.

The students enlisted the help of Lawrenceburg Mayor Kelly Mollaun. The mayor met with the class last month and decided to get the city involved by covering the costs of the litter removal.

“The (Dearborn County) Recycling Center provided us with a bunch of trash bags, gloves and other stuff that you need for it,” says student Lucy Stoecklin.

Classmate Calum May is also one of the main organizers of Help the Highway.

If you or your organization want to volunteer with the cleanup, meet at the St. Lawrence School parking lot off of Short Street at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
