(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – One championship down, one to go for Mason Parris.
The Michigan fifth-year senior captured the heavyweight individual title at Big Ten Conference Championship on Sunday.
Parris (28-0) earned a 5-3 decision of Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet in the championship round. It was a dramatic win as Parris completed the winning takedown in overtime.
The Lawrenceburg native is the first Michigan wrestler to capture a Big Ten heavyweight championship since 1998.
Parris had come close before, finishing as the runner-up in 2020 and 2021.
Now, Parris sets his sights on the NCAA Championship. Parris’ best finish at the NCAA Championship came as a junior when he took runner-up. He was fifth last year.
He enters the tournament as the top-ranked heavyweight in the country.
