(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Mason Parris’ freshman season with the University of Michigan wrestling team won't end with a title at the NCAA Division I Championships.

Parris, a 2018 Lawrenceburg High School graduate, made his first appearance at the national championship meet on Thursday, March 21 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. He was seeded fifth in the heavyweight division.

Parris lost his opening match to Iowa’s 28th-seeded Sam Stoll on an 8-5 decision, but he bounced back in the consolations with a pin of North Carolina’s Cory Gilliland-Dani in the first period. The pin was Mason’s 12th of the season.

Mason will continue wrestling in consolations on Friday.

The Wolverines team is in seventh place with 17.5 points after the first day of competition. Penn State is in first place with 32.5 points, followed by Ohio State’s 25.5 and Iowa’s 24.

Three Michigan wrestlers – Steven Micic (133 lbs.), Alec Pantaleo (157 lbs.) and Myles Amine (174 lbs.) – have each advanced to the quarterfinal round of their respective weight classes.
