Five Local Teams Win Soccer Sectional Championships

Teams from Batesville, EC, Lawrenceburg, and Oldenburg Academy advanced.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Five teams from southeastern Indiana won soccer sectional championships on Saturday. 

Lawrenceburg, East Central and Oldenburg Academy advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals in the IHSAA Girls Soccer State Tournament, while Batesville and Oldenburg Academy are still alive in the IHSAA Boys Soccer State Tournament. 

Lawrenceburg, the defending Class 2A State Champions, won a hard-fought Sectional 29 Championship Game against Batesville. Ava Merkel scored the lone goal for the Tigers. Mackenzie Scott pitched a shutout in goal with two saves. 

The #7 Lady Tigers (13-5-1) will host #13 Madison (17-2-1) on Thursday at 6 PM. 

In Class 3A, East Central won Sectional 12 with a 1-0 win over New Palestine. Maria Meyer scored the lone goal of the game off an assist from Peyton Aichele. 

#18 East Central (14-3-1) will travel to Franklin Central (7-8-3) Thursday at 6 PM. 

Oldenburg Academy, the top-ranked team in Class A, won decisively in the Sectional 44 title game against South Ripley. The Twisters blanked the Raiders 10-0. 

Mary Kara Wanstrath and Sophia Leising each had a hat trick. Claire Niese added two goals and four assists. Madison Hamilton and Lydia Niese also scored. 

#1 Oldenburg Academy (18-0-1) will play at #12 Monrovia (16-3) on Thursday at 6 PM. 

On the boys' side, Oldenburg Academy defeated Union County by a score of 2-1 in the Sectional 44 Championship. The #8 Twisters (11-4-4) will travel to #17 Southwestern (Hanover) (13-2-4) on Wednesday at 6 PM. 

Batesville were crowned Sectional Champions in Class 2A, advancing past Madison in dramatic fashion. The Bulldogs and Cubs played to a 3-3 draw, forcing penalty kicks, where Batesville advanced 4-3. 

The Bulldogs (6-8-2) will host #16 Charlestown (12-3) on Wednesday at 6 PM.
