(Boone County, Ky.) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of a weekend ramp closure in Boone County as part of the ongoing resurfacing project on Interstate 71.

Beginning Friday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m., the I-75 northbound off-ramp to I-71 southbound (Exit 173) will be closed to allow crews to address base failure repairs. The closure is necessary to complete deep repairs that cannot be performed efficiently while being open to traffic.

The ramp is expected to reopen by 7 a.m. on Monday, June 23.

Detour Information

During the ramp closure, traffic will be detoured to Exit 175 for Richwood Road (KY 338), where motorists can re-enter I-71/75 southbound and use Exit 173 to merge onto I-71 southbound. Detour signage will be posted to guide motorists.

Additional Lane Closures

A single lane closure on I-71 southbound will also be in place near the I-71/I-75 split during this weekend work. The closure will alternate between the left and right lanes as needed. Motorists should remain alert and watch for signs indicating shifting traffic patterns.

Overnight Construction Continues

Beyond this weekend, construction will continue during overnight hours, with lane closures possible, Monday through Sunday, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., as resurfacing operations progress throughout the corridor.

Project Background

A resurfacing project on I-71 in Boone County began on Friday, May 16. Crews are resurfacing I-71 from the Boone/Gallatin County line (69.8 mile point) to the I-71 and I-75 interchange (77.4 mile point), a distance of 7.6 miles.

Motorists should expect single lane closures between the evening/overnight hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m.

As part of this project, a high friction surface will be applied on the ramp from I-71 northbound to I-75 northbound. The higher pavement friction will help motorists maintain better control in both dry and wet driving conditions.

No lane closures will be permitted during the Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving holiday weekends.

Eaton Asphalt Paving Co. Inc. is contracted to perform the $12,794,226 project on behalf of KYTC. The project has an expected completion date of Nov. 30, 2025.

Project schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
