Village Of Cleves Will Dissolve Police Department

Village Council voted to dissolve the PD and contract the Hamilton Co. Sheriff's Department for law enforcement services.

(Cleves, Oh.) – The Village of Cleves will turn to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement services.

This comes after Village Council voted 5-1 on Tuesday night to dissolve the police department, reports FOX-19 NOW.

According to the report, Mayor Stephen Myers said the emergency meeting was called after Village leadership learned that interim Police Chief Justin Habig was considering taking a job elsewhere.

Aside from having too few officers, the move to dissolve the police department is seen as a cost cutting measure by council. The police department currently takes up two-thirds of the village’s $1 million budget.

The Village of Cleves will contract the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services beginning October 5.

A similar move was made in 2010 when the village dissolved the fire department and contracted Miami Township for fire and EMS services.
