Village Of Cleves Calls Emergency Meeting To Consider Dissolving Police Department

The meeting will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m.

(Cleves, Oh.) – An emergency meeting will be held tonight in Cleves to discuss the future of the police department.

The Village Council will meet in Emergency Session at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is for Council to consider entering into a contract with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department to provide police protection within the Village of Cleves.

If Council moves forward with a deal with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, the Village of Cleves Police Department would be dissolved.

FOX-19 reported earlier this month the budget gaps, officer vacancies and difficulty recruiting has led to a proposal to dissolve the police department.

Dissolving the police department would keep the Village from imposing a substantial tax increase. The police department currently takes up two-thirds of the Village’s $1 million budget.

It would not be the first time the Village has dissolved a first responder agency. The Village Council voted to disband the fire department in 2010. Since then, the Village has contracted Miami Township for fire and paramedic issues.

Tonight’s meeting will be held at Miami Township Hall, 112 South Miami Avenue in Cleves.
