(Versailles, Ind.) – Volunteer firefighters are invaluable to their community.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 74.2 percent of the 765 registered fire departments across the state of Indiana are volunteer. Another 14.3 percent are mostly volunteer.

However, the number of volunteers responding to emergency calls continues to decrease.

Versailles Fire Rescue is hoping to buck the trend after receiving a grant through the Indiana Fire Chief’s Association for Firefighter Recruitment and Retention.

The department is developing and implementing a recruitment and retention program with materials made available through the grant to help recruit and retain firefighters for the Versailles and Johnson Township communities.

Fire departments need volunteers with various types of knowledge, skills, and abilities to be guardians of their community.

Community members who are interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter should contact their local volunteer fire department.
