UPDATE: Two Accidents Snarled US 50

Update posted at 11:04 a.m.:

(Versailles, Ind.) - Police in Ripley County had a busy Wednesday morning dealing with two serious traffic accidents on U.S. 50 near Versailles.

The first crash occurred at about 8:00 a.m. when three vehicles were involved in a collision on westbound U.S. 50 near the Versailles State Park during heavy rains.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Barry A. Beverly, of Cross Plains, and Alice Reaves, of Dillsboro, were driving separate vehicles eastbound when Beverly’s vehicle hydroplaned and went into the opposite lane. Beverly’s vehicle then collided with a third vehicle driven by William Robertson, of Moores Hill.

Both Reaves, 57, and Beverly, 56, were transported to Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville.

Robertson, 63, refused transport at the scene of the accident.

Deputies said the tires on Beverly’s vehicle had no discernible tread left on them, leading to the initial hydroplaning.

U.S. 50 was narrowed to a single lane of traffic during the accident cleanup.

The accident is still under investigation by Sheriff’s Office Corporal Rob Bradley. Assisting at the scene were Versailles Police, Truck 61, Car 60 of Versailles Fire, Rescue 69 and Rescue 30.

About an hour later at 9:00 a.m., a second unrelated accident occurred just east of Versailles.

Witnesses said the crash involved three passenger vehicles and a semi truck. Injuries were believed to be involved.

That crash remains under investigation by the Versailles Police Department.
