Two Injured in Downtown Aurora Apartment Fire

The fire broke out on Friday evening on Third Street.

(Aurora, Ind.) - Two people were injured in a structure fire in Aurora.

The fire broke out at an apartment building on Third Street on Friday around 6:07 p.m.

Before firefighters arrived at the scene, a concerned citizen and then Aurora Police knocked on the door of all four apartments to see if any occupants were inside, but could not gain entry due to heavy smoke and extreme heat.

Aurora Firefighters arrived and made their way up the stairs and quickly knocked down a fire located in a bathroom. A short time later, a male occupant was located in the living room. The male, who remains unidentified, was carried out of the building to Aurora EMS and was later airlifted to UC Medical Center with 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 80 percent of his body. He is currently receiving treatment in their burn unit.

A second victim was transported to St. Elizabeth Dearborn for smoke inhalation.

Preliminary findings are that the fire originated in the bathroom area of the apartment but the cause has been ruled undetermined at this time. The Indiana Fire Marshal is investigating.

Estimated fire damage is in the $75,000 range. Geneva's Quilts, which is located in the same building, did not receive any fire or smoke damage.

Aurora Fire was assisted at the scene by Aurora EMS, Lawrenceburg Paramedic Unit, Hogan Fire, Lawrenceburg Fire, Greendale Fire, Aurora Utilities, and Duke Energy.
