Two Batesville Students Win College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships

Two Batesville High School graduates received the prestigious scholarships.

(Batesville, Ind.) - Two Batesville High School students are recipients of National Merit Scholarships.

Madeline Greene and Coleman Jennewein are among just 3,500 winners nationwide for the National Merit Scholarships sponsored by U.S. colleges and universities.

The scholarships each range from $500 up to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

Greene is planning to attend the University of Alabama to study surgical medicine.

Jennewein plans to go to Purdue University for chemical engineering.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation says 4,000 additional scholarships sponsored by colleges will be announced in July.

According to the corporation, to compete for Merit Scholarship awards, semifinalists first had to advance to the Finalist level of the competition by fulfilling additional requirements. Each semifinalist was asked to submit a detailed scholarship application, which included writing an essay and providing information about extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions. Semifinalists also had to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and earn SAT scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance.
