Super Bowl Could Put Smoking Ban On Fast Track

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana could have a statewide smoking ban before the Super Bowl in Indianapolis February 5.

Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) told the Associated Press Thursday a smoking ban in the legislature could be put on the fast track.

Bosma’s comments come after Indianapolis’ City-County Council voted against enacting a city-wide smoking ban on Tuesday.

Rep. Charlie Brown (D-Gary) said he plans to file a bill when the state legislature goes into session in January. He hopes it can be passed before the city takes the national stage for the big game.

“It is going to be a big gala, a fantastic time in downtown Indianapolis,” Brown said. “We don’t need a black eye from visitors suffering through smoke.”

A smoking ban bill has failed at the statehouse each of the past several years. Those past proposals included exemptions for casinos, veterans clubs, cigar bars, and other establishments.
