Sunday Motorcycle Sales Nears Approval

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - You cannot buy cars in Indiana on Sundays, but you may soon be able to buy motorcycles.

Senate Bill 192 would remove a ban on Sunday motorcycle sales. Indiana’s House of Representatives voted on Monday to pass the bill on a 68-31 vote.

The bill now goes to the full Senate for consideration of some changes made by House members. If the Senate approves, the bill would go to Governor Mitch Daniels, who may sign it into law.

The legislation was authored by Se. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg).

“Statewide, Indiana has more than 400 motorcycle dealerships,” Leising said. “This means potentially thousands of residents are connected to this industry in some way and, during times when families are struggling financially, we should do everything we can to give the industry a boost and help create more jobs or increased wages. Permitting motorcycle sales on Sunday is one small way to re-energize economic development while also giving consumers the basic freedom to choose to purchase a motorcycle on any day of the week.”

Currently, Indiana law states a person who buys, sells or trades motor vehicles on Sundays is committing a Class B misdemeanor.
