(Greendale, Ind.) - As the Ohio River rises, Dearborn County Water Rescue and Greendale Fire Department had to save a stranded man and his grandchild Tuesday.

A man driving a pickup truck and his grandchild became stuck in high water on a road in Oxbow wetlands preserve near Hardintown at about 4:30 p.m., according to Dearborn County Water Rescue Capt. Bill Black, Jr.

A water rescue crew waded through the water to reach the stranded pickup, which had water up to the seats inside the truck’s cab. The rescuers brought the man and child to safety.

Dearborn County Water Rescue Captain Bill Black is reminding all motorists to never drive through high water.

“I think he thought he could drive through the water because he’s been on that road before,” Black said.

The Ohio River is expected to crest at about 48 feet, four feet below flood stage, Wednesday. Some other low-lying roads could be flooded over until the water recedes.

“Don’t be crazy. Think about what you’re doing. You don’t know what’s under the water. It’s possible the road may have changed,” Black added.
