(Rising Sun, Ind.) - There’s the smell of asphalt in Rising Sun.

The city is having $633,000 in road paving and sidewalk repairs performed this year. Nineteen roads throughout the small city are getting fresh blacktop.

About $501,000 of the funding is being paid for by an Indiana Community Crossings Grant. The city is kicking in the other $132,000.

Mayor Brent Bascom calls the project an investment in Rising Sun’s infrastructure.

“With sound financial planning and foresight, our city administration was able to budget nearly $132,000 to match the grant funding,” Bascom said in a statement. “Without our match, there is no grant.  With no grant, we couldn’t afford to address most of our deficiencies we will repair this year. Milling and resurfacing 19 roads plus installing ADA accessible curb sidewalks all in one year is a major win for Rising Sun. I know there will be some minor inconveniences with parking restrictions and road closures, but all are temporary and will yield to much better streets for our community.”
