(St. Leon, Ind.) – Two chip-seal and fog-seal road projects in southeastern Indiana will take place in June.

Resurfacing of State Road 1 in Dearborn and Franklin counties has been pushed back to next week, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation. It was supposed to be June 11-13 that the highway would be partially closed so that INDOT crews could put on a new chip-seal layer between St. Leon and US 52. Wet weather this week has delayed the work until next Monday and Tuesday, June 18 and 19.

When the project is in action, INDOT maintenance crews will be present on S.R. 1 from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. each day. Pilot vehicles will escort local motorists through the work zone between St. Leon and Cedar Grove. Otherwise, the north-highway will close to thru traffic during hours of operation.

INDOT is also planning to chip-seal to State Road 156 between Rising Sun and Patriot next Wednesday and Thursday, June 20 and 21, weather again permitting. Flaggers will be present to direct motorists through the work zone.

That same section of S.R. 156 between S.R. 250 and S.R. 56 will be fog-sealed on Tuesday, June 26 and Wednesday, June 27.

According to INDOT, chip seals are a cost-effective way to protect pavement from moisture intrusion and ultra violet ray degradation.  Small chips of limestone embedded in a liquid asphalt overcoat to reestablish surface friction for optimum stopping capabilities and improved maneuverability.
