(Sunman, Ind.) – It’s stood since 1881, but St. Nicholas School in Sunman is due to be demolished this May.
Last April, the school launched the St. Nicholas Heritage Project, which included the building of a new Education Center and a new Fellowship Center.
With the project comes the demolition of the 138-year-old St. Nicholas School.
All area residents are invited to attend “A Walk of Remembrance” on Sunday, May 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Attendees will have the opportunity to make their final walk through the historic school before it’s torn down. Photographs, yearbooks and other memorabilia will be available for viewing in the gymnasium.
As for the new Education and Fellowship centers, work continues to progress on the $6.1 million project. Work began on the Education Center in April 2018, but the Fellowship Center project has not started yet as funds are still being raised.
The new Education Center will feature nine classrooms, a combination library/music room, STEM lab, upgraded technology, improved accessibility and a new heating and cooling system.
The Fellowship Center will house many school and parish wide activities, ministries and large community functions, including a new regulation size basketball court, performing arts stage, updated kitchen facilities and cafeteria space and multi-purpose rooms.
