UPDATE: Shelter In Place Order Lifted Following Steel Plant Fire

UPDATE: A chemical fire broke out at a steel plant in Ghent, Kentucky Monday morning.

Update published at 11:55 a.m.:

There was a shelter in place order for part of Gallatin and Switzerland counties Monday morning.

A fire broke out before 5:00 a.m. at Steel Technologies in Ghent.

People from Ghent to the Markland Dam were told to shelter in place because of possible toxic smoke.

U.S. 42 was closed and the order affected school bus routes in Gallatin and Switzerland counties.

The shelter in place order was lifted around 8:00 a.m.

Nobody was hurt, but the building at the steel plant was badly damaged.

 

Update published at 8:16 a.m.:

The shelter in place order in Gallatin County has been lifted as of 8:00 a.m. U.S. 42 has reopened in Ghent.

The Steel Technologies facility was evacuated when the first started. 

The HazMat situation across the river also impacted residents in Switzerland County.

(Ghent, Ky.) – Residents in the vicinity of Steel Technologies in Ghent, Kentucky are being advised to shelter in place Monday morning.

A chemical fire and HazMat situation was reported at the steel plant on U.S. 42 in Gallatin County prior to 6:00 a.m.

A shelter in place order has been prompted for residents from Ghent to Markland Lock & Dam.

Gallatin County Schools said the bus will not be able to pick up students who live west of 184 down to Bear’s Trail.
