(Aurora, Ind.) - South Dearborn Community Schools’ facilities and enrollment will again be the topic of discussion Tuesday evening, June 4.

SDCSC Superintendent Eric Lows is holding the latest in a series of community meetings. It will run from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the South Dearborn Middle School cafeteria, according to a notice from the central office. All are welcome.

Previous public meetings dealing with the subjects have been held April 23, May 14 and 28.

“This is going to present a financial problem to the district. There is no doubt about it,” Lows said at the April 23 meeting. “We have to create a plan. We want to do that with your help.”

Much information about the challenges facing the school corporation were laid out at that April meeting. Read about it here.

As the district’s enrollment has been shrinking in recent years with no growth expected in the foreseeable future, an advisory committee has assembled a list of options for the district to adapt and cease operating at a deficit. Those options include the possible closing of one or more schools.

At the same time, the school district is considering up to $5.17 million worth of maintenance and improvements at South Dearborn High School, the one school which appears certain to remain open. The proposed improvements would largely be focused on the high school’s auditorium, swimming pool, and football facilities

The spending could require a property tax increase for property owners within the school district.
