(Holton, Ind.) – The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is warning of a scam which targets southern Indiana tornado victims.
People living in tornado impacted areas have reported receiving phone calls claiming to be the American Red Cross.
During the call, residents are asked to leave their home and to pay a $25 fee for debris removal.
The Red Cross says they will never call and ask for money for relief services.
IDHS says the American Red Cross will never call and ask for money for disaster relief services. If anyone calls or shows up at your home representing themselves as part of the American Red Cross and asks for money, report the contact to local law enforcement immediately.
People who need recovery services can call 211 or the Red Cross at (800) 696-3873.
