(Rising Sun, Ind.) – Rising Sun Police are warning area residents of a phone scam.

The callers are reportedly saying the are taking donations for the Rising Sun Police Department and other surrounding law enforcement agencies.

According to Rising Sun Police, the scammers will in some cases spoof non-emergency local telephone numbers in attempt to scam residents.

If you receive a telephone call from a local number and are suspicious it may be a scam, simply hang up, and call the Rising Sun Police Department’s non-emergent number at 812-438-3737 to verify if the call was legitimate.

“The Rising Sun Police Department, or any legitimate law enforcement agency for that matter, will never ask for any type of payment, banking information, and credit/debit card numbers via phone call. Please share this with your elderly family and friends who do not have Facebook for they are often the individuals who fall victim to these scams,” read a Facebook post from Rising Sun Police.
