A resident who witnessed a crash that knocked out power in Greendale described the scene to Eagle Country 99.3.

The witness said he looked out of his home's window at around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday to find that a vehicle had struck a utility pole on Ridge Avenue. He immediately called 911.

Greendale Police say Tyler Woolpert, 27, of Greendale, had fallen asleep at the wheel of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata. He was not injured.

Police and firefighters arrived within five minutes, according to the witness. Soon afterwards, flames were spotted beneath the hood of the car.

Because of the fallen power lines, firefighters could not use water to douse the flames. Firefighters attempted to use dry chemicals to extinguish the fire beneath the hood.

The witness said the car fire continued to burn until electric company crews were able to shut off electricity.

Ridge Avenue was shut down until late Wednesday morning.

Greendale Police said the crash remains under investigation, but drugs and alcohol are not suspected.

Greendale Fire Department and Lawrenceburg Police Department assisted at the scene.
