Police Arrest Three After Marijuana And Child Found In Same Apartment

The home search was part of a burglary investigation.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Three people are facing charges after drugs were found in a Lawrenceburg apartment where a child was being raised.

Lawrenceburg Police were investigating a reported burglary when they served a search warrant at the apartment on the 400 block of Short Street in downtown on February 20, a probable cause affidavit filed in Dearborn Superior Court I states.

Throughout the apartment, officers allegedly found marijuana, paraphernalia, and a digital scale – much of it within the reach of the child who was also in the home. One item of paraphernalia was located in the child’s bedroom.

Those charged after the search include the parents: Jacob Courtney, 20, and Joplin Barrett, 19. Also arrested was Barrett’s mother, Amy Barrett, 43.

Courtney allegedly told police that the drugs and items were his. He denied any knowledge of the burglary which police were investigating.

The three are each charged with Neglect of a Dependent (level 6 felony), Maintaining a Common Nuisance (level 6 felony), Possession of Marijuana (class B misdemeanor), and Possession of Paraphernalia (class C misdemeanor).

Officers filed a report with the Indiana Department of Child Services regarding their findings in the home.
