Is this the year online gaming comes to Indiana?
INDIANAPOLIS - Online gaming has been a topic for years at the Indiana Statehouse.
A bill that would legalize online lottery and casino gaming passed the House Public Policy Committee this week and will be sent to the House for consideration.
House Bill 1432 would allow Indiana's existing casinos and racinos to offer casino-style games online and on mobile devices.
Ethan Manning (R-Logansport), the author of the bill, estimates that online gaming could bring the state of Indiana more than $300 million annually in new revenue.
The legislation would authorize the lottery commission to operate the sale of draw games and eInstant games over the internet. The commission would be required to adopt rules concerning the bulk purchase of lottery products.
The gaming commission would be required to establish the Indiana Responsible Gaming and Problem Gaming Commission to develop and administer the program.
A licensed owner of a riverboat, an operating agent operating a riverboat in a historic hotel district, a permit holder conducting gambling games at the permit holder's racetrack, or an Indian tribe that meets certain requirements would be authorized to conduct interactive gaming.
HB 1432 provides for distributions to support the horse racing industry and revenue sharing to cities and counties in which casinos are operated.
