One Dead After Lengthy Standoff in Jennings Co.

(Jennings County, Ind.) – A death investigation is underway in Jennings County.

According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, a 12-hour standoff with an armed wanted man to place on Thursday at a rural residence on County Road 550 West.

Officers arrived at the home after receiving reports that Cory Jenkins, 38, was at the residence.

Jenkins was wanted on multiple felony warrants.

According to Sgt. Wheeles, Jenkins barricaded himself inside the residence, holding family members inside against their will while in possession of a firearm.

Troopers and other responding law enforcement officers were eventually able to get three family members to safety after they climbed out a window. A fourth person was also taken to safety.

Over the 12-hour standoff, negotiators spoke to Jenkins in an attempt to have him leave the residence peacefully, as he was observed holding a handgun multiple times during the incident.

The incident came to a conclusion when Jenkins took his own life.

Detectives with the Indiana State Police – Versailles Post are continuing to investigate.
