The initiative's goal is development of new skills, and cultivation of real-world opportunities.

(Oldenburg, Ind.) - Oldenburg Academy’s innovative program is underway. Mission Mondays provides students with immersive, hands-on learning experiences every Monday. The initiative’s goal is three-fold: development of new skills, engagement with the community, and cultivation of real-world opportunities.

Since its launch, Mission Mondays has offered a wide range of experiences for students across all grade levels:

  • Freshmen explored Oldenburg’s history on guided walking tours and participated in a Life Skills Bootcamp covering automotive basics, communication skills, and financial literacy.
  • Sophomores spent time with veterans at the VFW, assembling care packages for current soldier and will participate in an art and design experience in Columbus, Indiana.
  • Juniors completed service projects at So Loved Kids Closet, Twice Blessed, and local parks and took a historical tour in Madison, Indiana. They will soon take part in a leadership retreat and a government session with Batesville’s mayor.
  • Seniors are gaining in-depth, hands-on experience through internships at locations ranging from local businesses to opportunities as far away as Cincinnati.

Senior Rachel Suttmann appreciates the dedicated time she can now spend interning at the University of Cincinnati in the CARE/Crawley Center. “Mission Mondays has allowed me to travel an hour away to Cincinnati to shadow Dr. Hyacinth, who is researching the relationship between sickle cell disease and cognitive deficit. Hyacinth has taught me important lab techniques, explained how to conduct credible, unbiased experiments, and familiarized me with the new technology at the center,” said Suttman. “Dr. Hyacinth has his doctorate in biomedical science, which is the degree I want to pursue. It really is a perfect fit.”

"Through Mission Mondays, students step beyond the classroom and into opportunities that impact their future" said OA President Annette Hunger. "Whether it's serving the community, developing life skills, or exploring careers, they're accessing experiences that shape who they will become."
