(Rising Sun, Ind.) - Ohio County Commissioners had their turn on Monday to vote on inter-local agreement that would close the Rising Sun Police Department.

President Connie Brown tells Eagle Country 99.3 that the commissioners voted unanimously to pass the agreement.

This comes on the heels of City Council passing the same agreement a week prior.

Under the agreement, the Rising Sun Police Department would be closed and all law enforcement duties within the county would be passed to the Ohio County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's Tom Baxter explained at the February 5 City Council meeting that the three Rising Sun Police officers and other staff have a job at the Sheriff's Office.

Discussions about closing the Rising Sun Police Department have been circulating for years, according to Mayor Steve Slack. The primary reasons for closure is minimal staff, and lack of experienced leadership.

Council is expected to hold a special meeting regarding the matter on Monday, February 12 at 6:00 p.m.
