(Indianapolis, Ind.) - President Obama has approved federal assistance for Hoosiers affected by the deadly tornado outbreak of three weeks ago.

Last week, Governor Mitch Daniels applied for federal assistance for state and local governments in five counties which saw damage and increased costs from the tornadoes. The president sent back notification the aid had been approved Thursday evening.

The approval means the state government along with local governments and some non-profits in Clark, Jefferson, Ripley, Scott and Washington counties will receive help.

County governments can apply to have the federal government cover 75 percent of the cost of removing debris along with other disaster-related funding including the repair of roads, utilities and public buildings.

Thirteen people were killed by the storms.
