Nonprofit Raising Funds to Convert Former North Dearborn School Site Into Vibrant Park

The property has been leased to North Dearborn Community Park by the Sunman-Dearborn Schools for a 20-year term.

(Logan Township, Ind.) - Fundraising efforts have began to convert the former North Dearborn High School and North Dearborn Elementary School site into a vibrant recreational space.

The property has been leased to the North Dearborn Community Park by the Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation for a 20-year term with no rent required. All improvements to the property are at the expense of the North Dearborn Community Park, which will be funded through grants, corporate sponsors and donations.

The project is led by a group of passionate community members invested in enhancing the local community's quality of life. Phase one of the plan includes the development of a one-mile paved loop that caters to walkers, runners, and bikers, offering a safe and accessible area for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

Future phases of development are open to community input, reflecting the board's commitment to creating a space that truly meets the area's needs. Proposed amenities include a playground with sensory area, athletic courts, a skatepark, and a picnic shelter, all aimed at fostering an active outdoor lifestyle.

Situated on the historic site of the former schools, this project respects the property's legacy while creating a bright future for the northern Dearborn County area. Community members, alumni, and local businesses are encouraged to contribute financially or volunteer their services. Donations are tax-deductible.

Brenda Wheat, President of the North Dearborn Community Park board, said, "We're excited to create a space for our community to exercise and play safely, all while protecting a place that holds wonderful memories for many in this area. Your support and input are crucial in making this vision a reality."

When the park was first proposed, an indication was made that construction could start at the beginning of 2025.  An official timeline has yet to be determined.
