(Petersburg, Ky.) – Northern Kentucky motorists can now ride down a road named after a hometown Medal of Honor recipient.
Charles Fleek, a Petersburg native, was killed in Vietnam over 49 years ago when he threw himself on a grenade to save eight other members of his unit that were unaware a grenade had been thrown.
For his actions, Fleek was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award given by the United States for valor.
In August, a stretch of Kentucky 20 in Petersburg was dedicated as the Sgt. Charles ‘Chalkie’ Fleek Memorial Highway because of his incredible bravery and selflessness to his country.
Two signs bearing Fleek’s name now bookend the highway.
